Counselling
SPEAK TO SOMEONE WHO WILL LISTEN!!!!
A SiMPLY Counselling session is a confidential discussion held in private with a therapist trained to assist you to make sense of problems and explore deeper core issues impacting your life.
People stay in therapy for varying lengths of time but generally until they have achieved the change or improvements they were seeking to achieve. It is okay to ask the therapist what they recommend and gain insights from their experience about the likely number of sessions.
SiMPLY Counselling sessions are conducted in a client centred format where you are treated as the EXPERT of your own life where the therapist assists you to tap into your own inner resources as you become part of the solution to your own problem. In general the therapist will ASSIST you to identify and explore your reaction to life events and how you can learn to respond more constructively to life and its challenges ……
During a counselling session you should experience a range of things such as; being listened to and being heard, respect, human engagement, normalisation, situation clarification, new perspectives, encouragement, resource indentification, goal setting etc…
Therapy Styles
A Quick word regarding therapy styles
SIMPLY Counselling staff use a range of therapies to address a broad spectrum of client conditions. Styles of therapy vary across the caring profession but a few seem to have current dominance. There are a range of therapies referred to as “Empirically Validated Treatments”. These therapy styles have been used for some years and have been found to be most effective on the general population in US, UK and Australia. An example of a empiriacally valid treatment is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT as it is more commonly known. CBT now has an extensive research supporting its effectiveness and is used throughout the world. Basically CBT is used to modify behaviour by challenging and changing the thinking behind the behaviour. Another example of an empirically valid treatment is Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). Basically IPT therapists work with the clients emotions toward effecting positive behavioural or functional change.
Knowledge and Experience
EMPIRICAL - Empiricism is a philosophical doctrine that purport that all knowledge is derived from experience. Empiricists suggest that experience, especially with the senses, is the only source of knowledge. This philosophical position has had a range of positive affects and has gained considerable support over many years. Many of the recommended therapy techniques are established as effective treatments after they have been empirically tested and validated to ensure they produce adequate results.
INTUITION - Psychologists at times also need to follow and impression or hunch in order to assist clients to explore more fully their issues. Intutition is the process of knowing things about a client without the existence of specific knowledge.
THERAPY: Therefore when you link Empirical strategies with a flow of Intuitive knowledge wonderfully relevant and effective therapy and interventions are possible.
Trauma Model
Much of the SIMPLY Counselling work is performed using psychotherapy skills and CBT insight to focus on addressing client early life trauma. Our clinic offers a range of therapeutic interventions but after many years of working with some of the countries most damaged lives I have found a trauma model approach very helpful. If you would like to know more about working with traumatised individuals and those whose suffer PTSD from early life abuse and neglect, researcher John Briere’s material will be of interest. More on this subject of PTSD will appear in the research section of this website in the near future.
